Niharika was not happy at home and began looking for a way out. She met a young man who convinced her to go to India with him – where he promised they would marry. When they reached the India border, they were intercepted by our border checkpoint co-workers, who determined that Niharika was in grave danger of the common lure that traffickers use with teen girls: a proposal of marriage that leads to sex slavery. With our help, Niharika was safely returned to her family.
To protect, rescue and restore girls like Niharika, She Is Safe works with local Nepali partners.
- We rescue girls at border checkpoints and document their testimonies to assist law enforcement to prosecute traffickers.
- We restore girls in safe homes where they can heal, learn about their worth in Christ, and gain skills which will help them build self-sustaining lives of dignity and purpose.
- We protect girls by equipping families in remote villages with anti-trafficking information and by providing income generating training and supplies for businesses such as goat-raising, tailoring and farming.
Nepal is infamous as the busiest route for human trafficking, and the majority of those trafficked are females. A recent article from The Guardian details the abuse of women from Nepal as domestic and sex slaves.
Clearly, women should be able to live and work without the risks of exploitation. Help keep women and girls safe in Nepal by learning more about She Is Safe’s anti-trafficking and income generating work, and freeing girls by attending the upcoming Red Panda Benefit or being an event sponsor!
